Does a third-party keyboard drain your iPhone’s battery?

It is a fair thing to wonder before installing anything with a whole wardrobe of sounds, themes and backlight effects — that much variety looks like it should cost something. The short answer is that almost none of it does, and the reason is the same structural fact that answers most other worries about keyboard apps: an extension only exists while it is on screen.

The fact that answers most of it

A keyboard extension is not a small always-on program quietly ticking over in the background. iOS loads it the moment its keyboard is drawn and tears it down the moment that keyboard is dismissed or you switch to a different one. There is no process left afterwards for anything — a sound engine, an animation timer, a network call — to keep running in.

That single fact covers the part of the question people usually mean: does simply having a third-party keyboard installed cost anything while you are not using it. It does not, and it makes no difference whether you have one custom keyboard added or four. None of them are doing anything at all until you are actually looking at one.

Using any keyboard for a while does cost a little power, and none of the real costs are specific to third-party ones:

The one place a third-party keyboard is honestly different

There is a genuine, if small, cost that Apple’s own keyboard does not carry: the reload. Because a third-party keyboard’s extension is fully torn down when it leaves the screen, switching back to it after a gap means iOS has to load its code into memory again before the first keypress can be handled — closer to a cold app launch than to flipping between two things already running, as the guide on why a keyboard is slow to load covers in detail. That reload is a brief burst of CPU work, and a brief burst of CPU work is a brief, tiny amount of battery. It happens each time you return to the keyboard after it has been discarded, not while it sits unused, and it is genuinely too small to notice on a battery percentage over a normal day.

Does turning on Full Access change any of this?

No. Full Access lifts the sandbox a keyboard extension runs in — it grants the technical ability to reach the network, among other things — but it does not hand the extension a background mode or a way to keep existing once its keyboard is off screen. The same lifecycle from the first section still applies with Full Access on: no keyboard on screen, no process, nothing running, nothing to cost a percentage point. A keyboard would need a feature that actually calls out to a server, and would need to be doing that while its keyboard is visible, for Full Access to matter here at all.

How to check it on your own phone

Settings → Battery shows usage broken down by app over the last 24 hours or 10 days. A keyboard extension’s usage is folded into its containing app’s entry there rather than listed as a separate line, since that is how iOS accounts for every kind of app extension, not just keyboards. Look for the app in that list: if it sits near the bottom with a small percentage, or does not appear at all in a day you barely typed, that is the direct confirmation, on your own device, rather than something to take on faith.
