Where the GIF button actually lives
Open Messages and tap the small App Store icon, or the “+”, beside the text field, and a tray slides up: Images, Apple’s own GIF search; Memoji Stickers; Digital Touch; and any sticker packs you have downloaded from the App Store. All of it draws from that one tray, and the tray is a feature of the Messages app itself — built and maintained by Apple as part of Messages, not as part of whichever keyboard happens to be active underneath it.
Why swapping keyboards does not touch it
A text field and the strip of icons around it are two different things drawn by two different pieces of software. The keyboard only ever owns the part that turns taps into letters. The send button, the camera icon, the app drawer with GIFs and stickers in it — all of that belongs to the app you are typing in, sits in a bar directly above the keyboard, and stays exactly as it was no matter which keyboard is currently doing the typing underneath it. Switch from Apple’s keyboard to a third-party one and that bar does not even redraw, because nothing about it depends on the keyboard at all.
The same split holds outside Messages
WhatsApp has its own sticker button and its own GIF search, drawn by WhatsApp. Instagram DMs have theirs. Each app builds and owns that tray for itself, the same way Messages does, and in every case it is unrelated to which keyboard is installed or active. If an app offers GIFs or stickers at all, it still offers them after you add a custom keyboard — that part of the interface simply is not the keyboard’s to remove.
Why a few keyboards add a GIF button of their own anyway
Some keyboard apps do put an extra GIF search button inside their own panel, as a shortcut so you never have to leave the letter row to reach it. Doing that means the keyboard extension itself has to reach a server for search results, which is genuine network activity and the honest reason that specific feature commonly asks for Full Access — the permission covers the search request, not some general watch over everything you type. A keyboard that skips this button has not lost anything compared to one that has it; it is simply leaving that particular search exactly where it already was, one tap away in the app’s own tray.
Sticker packs specifically
A sticker pack bought or downloaded from the App Store is its own small iMessage app, tied to your Apple ID and to Messages rather than to any keyboard. It appears in the same app drawer regardless of which keyboard is active when you open the conversation, and removing, adding or switching a keyboard has no effect on which packs you have or whether they still work.
Where Kibo fits
Kibo does not add a GIF search button of its own — its emoji and kaomoji panels are text, not a network feature, which is part of how it stays inside the extension’s memory budget and keeps working with Full Access left off.
