Does Focus mode turn off keyboard sound on iPhone?

Turn on a Focus expecting a quieter phone, and the keyboard keeps clicking exactly as it did a minute earlier. Turn one off, and a keyboard that was already silent stays silent. What Focus and Do Not Disturb actually silence
Do Not Disturb, Work, Personal, Sleep, or a custom Focus you built yourself — every one of them governs interruptions. Incoming call rings, notification banners, badges, lock screen alerts, and whether a given app or person is allowed to reach you at all while the Focus runs. Everything inside a Focus is a rule about what gets to interrupt you. None of it is a rule about the sound iOS makes for its own interface while you are actively using the phone.
Keyboard sound lives in a different system entirely
A keyboard click is not a notification and was never routed through the Focus system. It is a short system sound effect, the same lightweight mechanism behind the Mail “sent” sound or the camera shutter, and iOS decides whether to play it based on the ring/silent switch on the side of the phone and the ringer volume — nothing else. That decision gets made fresh on every keypress, independently of whichever Focus happens to be active, or whether any Focus is active at all.
Why the two get confused
Part of it is the name: “Do Not Disturb” reads as a blanket instruction, so it is a reasonable guess that it would reach every sound the phone makes. Part of it is Control Center, where the Focus icon and, on some setups, quick access to sound-related toggles sit close together, which makes them feel like one settings family even though they act on entirely separate parts of iOS. Neither guess is unreasonable. It is just not how iOS actually wired the two.
The case that genuinely does mute it
There is a real situation where keyboard sound disappears mid-conversation without you touching a setting, and it is worth telling apart from Focus: an app with the microphone open, for a live call or an active recording, gets iOS to suppress system sounds so a click cannot end up on the audio. How to actually go quiet while typing
If the goal is a keyboard that makes no sound regardless of any Focus, the ring/silent switch on the side of the phone is the one setting that reaches it. Flip it to silent and every keyboard on the phone, Apple’s and any third-party one, stops clicking — no Focus required, and no Focus can undo it either. Keyboard haptics work the opposite way: they ignore the silent switch entirely and keep tapping under your thumb in silent mode, which is worth knowing if what you actually wanted in a meeting was feedback without noise, not silence without feedback.
