How to type italic text on iPhone
Italic text in a bio or a text message is another Unicode substitution, not a font toggle — and it is a stingier alphabet than bold: no digits at all, and one lowercase letter Unicode deliberately left out. Here is why, and how to type it on iPhone.
Run a word through a fancy-text style and it comes back 𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑐 in a plain Messages thread or an Instagram bio, neither of which has a font menu at all. iOS has no italic toggle for an ordinary text field outside a handful of apps — Notes, Mail, Pages — that support real formatting. What actually happened is a substitution: the letters you typed were swapped for a different set of characters that are already drawn slanted, before the text ever left the keyboard.
A separate alphabet, built for algebra
A real italic typeface is a rendering instruction — the letter “a” drawn on a slant by whichever font is doing the drawing. A text message cannot carry that instruction, since it stores plain characters with no formatting layer underneath. So italic text on a phone works the only way any style can survive a plain-text field: it is not the letter a tilted, it is a different letter entirely. Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block assigns an italic a its own codepoint, MATHEMATICAL ITALIC SMALL A, separate from the upright a you typed. A font draws it slanted because that is what the character is defined to look like.
That block exists for equations. In a line of mathematics, italic marks a variable — x, y, a coefficient — to set it apart from an upright constant or a named function, and that distinction changes what the expression means. Unicode gave italic letters a full set of their own characters for that reason, long before anyone used one to write a bio.
The one letter Unicode refuses to assign
Every italic letter has its own codepoint except one. Mathematical Italic Small H, the position where an italic lowercase h should sit, is deliberately left unassigned in the Unicode standard. The reason is older than the Mathematical Alphanumeric block itself: physics already had a character for exactly this shape, PLANCK CONSTANT, assigned decades earlier because ℎ shows up constantly in equations. Rather than create a second, redundant character that looks identical, Unicode’s committee left the slot empty and pointed to the existing one instead. The practical effect is that the italic h in most fancy-text output is quietly a different kind of character — an older, single-purpose symbol — from the twenty-five letters sitting around it, even though nothing about how it looks gives that away.
No digits, on top of that
Italic has a second, wider gap: it has no digit set at all. Bold, double-struck and monospace text each got their own italic-free set of 0 through 9 in Unicode, but italic never did. Type a number in the middle of an italic sentence and it drops straight back to plain, upright digits while the letters around it stay slanted. That is not a bug in any particular generator or keyboard — the character was simply never defined. Italic was invented to flag a variable in an equation, and a constant written as a digit never needed that same distinction, so no italic digit was ever assigned a codepoint.
What it costs to use
- It is a different character to a computer, not a styled version of the same one, so search, autocorrect and spell-check will not match a word typed in italic against a normal search for that word.
- A screen reader tends to announce the underlying Unicode character names, or skip them, rather than read the sentence naturally — workable for a single word, hard to sit through for a full paragraph.
- Support depends on the font on the reader’s device as well as the character existing at all. Italic text that looks correct on your iPhone can still show as an empty box to someone on an older or less common device, and you have no way to see that from your own phone.
- It is a one-for-one substitution, so it does not add hidden characters or change how long what you type looks in a character-limited field.
Typing it from the keyboard
The usual route is a web generator: type the sentence into a box, copy the italic result, switch back to the app you were writing in, and paste it. Why does the letter h look slightly different when I type in italic?
