Why does double-tapping the space bar add a period on iPhone?
The “.” Shortcut is a separate Settings → Keyboard switch from Auto-Correction, and it only reliably works on Apple’s own keyboard — here is what actually triggers it, where to turn it off, and why a third-party keyboard may not do the same thing.
You are typing fast, hit the space bar twice out of habit at the end of a sentence, and a period appears on its own — no “.” key involved at all. The first time it happens it can look like a stray tap did something odd. It did not. iPhone is deliberately watching for exactly that pattern.
What is actually happening
Apple calls this the “.” Shortcut. The moment you tap space a second time right after a word, iOS quietly deletes the space you just typed, drops in a period, and adds a fresh space after it. It happens in the same instant as the second tap, which is why it reads as the space bar itself inserting a period rather than as two separate edits stitched together.
Where the setting lives
Settings → General → Keyboard → “.” Shortcut. It is a single switch, on or off, and it ships turned on — which is why most people meet the behaviour itself long before they ever go looking for what controls it.
Why it does not fire everywhere you double-tap space
The shortcut only triggers in one specific spot: right after the last letter of a word, with nothing typed since. Double-tap space at the very start of a text field, right after a comma or a period you already typed, or after a blank line, and nothing happens — there was no word for the shortcut to close off. This is also why it never fires mid-word; the cursor has to be sitting immediately after a completed one.
It is not tied to Auto-Correction
Settings → General → Keyboard holds several switches that behave independently of each other despite living on the same screen — Auto-Correction, Predictive, Check Spelling, and this one. Turning Auto-Correction off does not touch the “.” Shortcut, and turning the “.” Shortcut off does not touch Auto-Correction. If you have gone looking for this setting because turning off autocorrect did not stop the period from appearing, that is why: you turned off a different switch.
Does it carry over to a third-party keyboard?
Not necessarily, and this is the part that trips people up. A keyboard you add from the App Store is a separate piece of code that iOS hands the keys to draw and the raw taps to interpret — it is not simply running Apple’s keyboard with a different coat of paint on top. Recognising a second space tap and turning it into a period is behaviour that keyboard’s own code has to implement, the same way a keyboard has to build its own emoji panel or its own gesture-typing engine rather than inheriting Apple’s. The Settings toggle for the “.” Shortcut is the one Apple’s own keyboard reads; there is no guarantee every third-party keyboard checks it, or offers the behaviour at all.
In practice this means the shortcut can behave differently depending on which keyboard is active at the moment — present on Apple’s keyboard, absent on one third-party keyboard, present but controlled by its own separate setting on another. None of that is a bug in any of them. It is the same boundary that decides whether swipe typing or a particular emoji panel comes along with a given keyboard: iOS hands over the frame and the keystrokes, not a shared feature set.
