Why does my iPhone keyboard look different in Safari?
Tap the address bar and a “.com” key appears; tap a search box elsewhere and it does not. A text field can ask iOS for a keyboard tuned to what it expects — a web address, an email, a number — and every keyboard, including a third-party one, is handed that same request and expected to draw accordingly.
Tap the address bar at the top of Safari and the keyboard that comes up is not quite the one you get in Notes or a text message. There is often a “.com” key sitting where you would expect ordinary punctuation, the slash is easier to reach, and autocorrect stops trying to “fix” what you type. Switch to a search box inside another app and the layout is different again. None of it is a bug, and none of it is Safari doing something special — it comes from a request the text field itself makes, before you ever tap it.

iOS lets whoever builds a text field mark it with a purpose: a web address, an email address, a phone number, a plain number, a name, a search query, or nothing in particular. A field marked for a web address is tuned around the shape of a URL rather than a sentence. Autocorrect and automatic capitalization switch off, since neither one helps with a domain name, and a “.com” key is added because it is the single most common thing anyone types into that field — with a press-and-hold on it usually offering “.net”, “.org” or a handful of other endings, the same long-press pattern used elsewhere on the keyboard for an accented letter or a currency sign. None of that is Safari’s own interface; it is the ordinary keyboard responding to a hint the address bar sent it.
