Does a third-party keyboard work with a Bluetooth mouse on iPhone?

A paired mouse turns into an on-screen pointer that clicks exactly where a finger would tap, so a keyboard extension cannot tell the two apart. Here is how iOS actually wires up a pointer, why that is a different mechanism from connecting a Bluetooth keyboard, and what a mouse click still cannot do.

Pair a mouse to an iPhone and a small circle appears on screen, moving wherever the mouse moves — the phone has a pointer now, the same idea as a cursor on a computer. The obvious next question is whether that pointer can actually operate a keyboard that is not Apple’s own: click a key with it, and does anything happen? It does, and for a reason that has nothing to do with which keyboard happens to be installed.

How iOS turns a mouse into a pointer

Pointer support lives in Settings → Accessibility → Touch → AssistiveTouch → Devices → Bluetooth Devices. Pair a mouse or trackpad there and iOS draws a pointer over everything else on screen, moved by the device instead of by a finger. It was built as an accessibility feature, for anyone who finds direct touch difficult, but nothing about turning it on requires any particular accessibility setting elsewhere — it works for anyone who wants a pointer on a phone screen.

What a click on a key actually does

A click delivers the same kind of touch event at the pointer’s location that a finger tap would generate at that exact point on the screen. The app underneath, and the keyboard extension drawing the keys, receive that event through the ordinary touch-handling code they already have — there is no separate “pointer was used” signal, and no way for either one to tell a click from a tap even if it wanted to. A key built to respond to a finger already responds to a mouse click, without anyone having written a single extra line of code for it.

Why this is not the same as connecting a Bluetooth keyboard

It is worth telling this apart from what happens when a hardware Bluetooth keyboard is paired instead, because the two sound similar and behave completely differently. A hardware keyboard makes iOS hide the on-screen keyboard altogether, since key presses travel straight into the text field and there is nothing left on screen to tap. A mouse does none of that. The on-screen keyboard stays exactly where it was, fully drawn — theme, key sound, backlight effect and all — and the pointer simply becomes another way of tapping the keys that are already there, alongside a finger rather than instead of one.

Placing the cursor and selecting text with a pointer

A click in the middle of a sentence places the text cursor at that exact point, the same as a tap, but with a mouse’s far finer aim than a fingertip covering several characters at once. Clicking and dragging extends a selection the same way dragging the blue handles on the text does. None of this depends on the keyboard extension building anything like Apple’s press-and-hold space-bar trackpad gesture — the precision comes from the pointer device itself, operating on the text field directly, so it works the same way on a keyboard that never implemented a trackpad gesture of its own.

A second button can stand in for a long press

Many keys rely on a press-and-hold: the accent options under a letter, the skin-tone picker under an emoji, a shift key that locks into caps. iOS lets a mouse’s second button be assigned to trigger that same long-press behaviour from its own per-device settings screen, so a click-and-hold is not the only way to reach it — a right-click reaches the same menu a held finger would.

What still forces Apple’s keyboard

A secure text field — a password box, a card number entry — swaps in iOS’s own keyboard the instant it gets focus, and a mouse pointer changes nothing about that. The swap happens at the same system level regardless of what is doing the clicking, and no keyboard, third-party or Apple’s, has a way to opt out of it.

Full Access has nothing to do with it

A pointer click is an ordinary touch event, the same category of thing a finger already sends, so it needs nothing beyond what any keyboard extension already has by default. Full Access governs network access and the system clipboard; it has no bearing on how a keyboard receives a click, whether that click came from a fingertip or a mouse.
