Why the on-screen keyboard disappears
The moment iOS detects a hardware keyboard, it stops showing the software one. There is no on-screen keyboard to look at, so there is nothing being drawn, nothing being tapped, and nothing to attach a click sound or a haptic pulse to. A key press instead travels straight from the physical keyboard into the text field through the system’s own input path — the same path a hardware keyboard on a Mac uses — and a keyboard extension, third-party or Apple’s, never sees that keypress at all.
This is worth separating from what people usually assume is happening. It is not that iOS mutes keyboard sound because a hardware keyboard is “louder” or because the two would clash. There is simply no on-screen key being pressed for a sound or a haptic to be tied to.
What that means for sound, haptics and themes
- Keyboard clicks — silent, on every keyboard, because the click plays in response to a tap on an on-screen key, and there is no on-screen key being tapped.
- Haptic feedback — the same. The Taptic Engine fires from a software key press; a hardware key press never generates one.
- Custom themes and backlight effects — nothing to render, because there are no on-screen keys left to draw a colour or an animation onto.
- Autocorrect and predictive text — unaffected. These operate on the text itself, not on key taps, so they keep working exactly as before.
The on-screen keyboard is not gone for good
iOS keeps a small keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen while a hardware keyboard is connected — the same icon used to dismiss the on-screen keyboard when it is showing. Tapping it brings the software keyboard back up over the hardware one, which is how you reach anything that only exists on screen: an emoji panel, a kaomoji tab, or a third-party keyboard’s own toolbar. The moment you do that and tap a key on screen with your finger, sound, haptics and theme are all back, because now there is an on-screen key being pressed again.
Typing on the physical keys themselves stays silent throughout, even with the on-screen keyboard summoned back up alongside it. The two input methods do not blend into one hybrid keyboard; the software one is either fully out of the picture or fully back, and only key presses on it — not on the hardware keyboard next to it — trigger anything.
Switching languages still works, just differently
With no globe key to tap, the usual way to cycle keyboards does not apply. Holding down the Globe or Fn key on the hardware keyboard itself brings up the same input-source picker iOS would otherwise show from a press-and-hold on the on-screen globe, letting you switch between whatever keyboards and languages you have added in Settings without touching the screen at all.
