Does iOS 26’s Liquid Glass affect custom keyboard themes on iPhone?

Liquid Glass is a system material Apple draws around its own interface, keyboard chrome included — it is not a filter that reskins whatever a third-party keyboard draws for itself. The suggestion bar above your keys picked up the new glass look; the theme underneath it did not move unless its own developer rebuilt it to.

You updated to iOS 26, and Control Center turned into something that looks like it is made of actual glass, app icons picked up a glossy shimmer, and the sheets that slide up over Safari got a new see-through edge. Then you opened the keyboard you picked out on purpose and it looked exactly like it did the day before the update — same solid colour, same flat keys, nothing glassy about it at all. It is a reasonable thing to notice, and it is not a sign the keyboard missed an update. Liquid Glass reached the parts of the screen Apple’s own code draws, and a third-party keyboard’s theme is not one of them.

What Liquid Glass actually is

Liquid Glass is the material iOS 26 introduced across the system: a translucent, refractive surface that bends and reflects whatever sits behind it, used for navigation bars, Control Center, sheets, app icons and a good deal of the keyboard’s own surrounding chrome. It replaced the flatter, more frosted blur look those same surfaces carried in earlier versions of iOS, and it is deliberately more reactive to light and to what is moving underneath it — the whole point of the redesign was to make those surfaces feel physically present rather than just tinted.

A material Apple’s own code draws, not a filter over everything on screen

The detail that decides the rest of this answer is the same one that decides whether Reduce Transparency reaches a given surface, covered in a separate guide: Liquid Glass is not a screen-wide effect that iOS stamps over every pixel regardless of where it came from. It is a rendering material — a specific look built into Apple’s UI frameworks — that a piece of software has to actually draw with in order to show up. iOS applies it automatically to the interface it draws itself, because Apple controls both sides of that decision. Anything drawn by separate code, a game, an ordinary app screen, or a keyboard extension’s own theme, only picks up that look if its own developer built it to.

Where that leaves a custom keyboard’s own theme

A third-party keyboard is handed an empty rectangle at the bottom of the screen and draws every key, background and colour inside it itself, from scratch — none of that drawing routes through the system layer Liquid Glass lives in. A theme that was a solid, opaque key fill before iOS 26 is still exactly that solid, opaque key fill after it: no new shimmer, no added translucency, no shift in colour. The redesign changing how Apple’s own surfaces look does not reach into a keyboard extension and repaint it, for the same reason a new coat of paint on a neighbour’s house does not repaint yours.

What did visibly change, right above the same keys

This is why the question comes up at all. The predictive-text suggestion strip sitting just above the keys, and the thin bar of chrome around it, are drawn by iOS itself and sit above whichever keyboard happens to be active — the same system layer covered in the guide on AutoFill, which shows saved passwords and text-message codes above a custom keyboard exactly as it would above Apple’s own. That strip picked up the Liquid Glass treatment along with the rest of the system interface, so it can now look like it is made of the same shimmering material as Control Center, directly above a row of keys that still look precisely as flat and opaque as they always did. Two different pieces of code drew those two layers, and only one of them changed.

Reduce Transparency still flattens the part that changed

Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Reduce Transparency was already the direct way to flatten that suggestion strip back to a plain fill before iOS 26, and it still is — Liquid Glass made the effect more prominent there, it did not introduce a new kind of effect the old setting cannot reach. It still has nothing to say about a custom keyboard’s own theme, for the same reason covered above: that theme is not drawn through the system layer the setting checks in the first place.

Could a keyboard’s own theme ever go glassy?

In principle, yes. Apple ships the new material as something any app or extension can choose to draw with in its own interface, so nothing stops a keyboard’s developer from building a theme that looks translucent and refractive on purpose. Nothing requires it either — adoption is a decision each piece of software makes for itself, not something iOS 26 forces onto every keyboard the moment it is installed. Whether any specific keyboard has picked that look up comes down entirely to whether an update to it was built with that goal in mind, the same way it always has for any visual trend on the platform.
