Why Arabic or Hebrew text looks mixed up on iPhone
Direction is a property of the text itself, not a keyboard setting. Why numbers and English words seem to land on the wrong side of a right-to-left sentence, what the cursor is actually doing at a boundary, and why some punctuation looks flipped.
It happens to almost everyone typing Arabic, Hebrew or Persian on a phone for the first time. A sentence is going right to left the way it should, then a phone number or an English word gets typed into the middle of it, and the result looks scrambled — digits on the wrong side, a word that jumps to where it was not typed. Nothing is broken. This is what right-to-left text does on every device, iPhone included, and it follows a fixed set of rules rather than a bug in any one keyboard.
Direction is a property of the text, not a keyboard setting
There is no “right-to-left mode” that a keyboard turns on or off. Every character carries a direction of its own — Arabic and Hebrew letters are strongly right-to-left, Latin letters and digits are strongly left-to-right, spaces and punctuation are neutral and take the direction of whatever is next to them. Software that displays text, iOS included, runs the Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm over every line to decide how to lay these out, and that same algorithm runs the same way no matter which app or which keyboard produced the text. Switching to an Arabic or Hebrew keyboard changes what you type; it does not change the rules that decide how it is arranged on screen.
Numbers and English words inside a right-to-left sentence
A phone number, a price, or a word borrowed from English inside an Arabic or Hebrew sentence forms its own short left-to-right run embedded in the surrounding right-to-left text. The digits inside that run still read left to right among themselves — 2026 reads as two-thousand-and-twenty-six, not backwards — but the run as a whole is placed according to the right-to-left flow around it, which is what makes it look like it landed on “the wrong side” to an eye used to purely left-to-right text. It has not moved to the wrong place; it has been placed exactly where the bidirectional algorithm puts an embedded left-to-right run inside right-to-left text.
This is easiest to see with a date or a price sitting near the start or end of a right-to-left sentence — it can appear to sit outside the sentence entirely, on the side you would expect the sentence to end rather than begin. Reading the whole line in the intended direction, rather than scanning left to right out of habit, is what makes it resolve.
What the cursor is doing when it seems to jump
Moving the cursor with the arrow keys, or with a hardware keyboard, follows logical order — the order the characters were actually typed in — not the visual left-to-right order on screen. Crossing from a right-to-left run into an embedded left-to-right one, the cursor can appear to jump across the screen rather than sliding one character at a time, because the next character in typing order is not the next character in reading position. Tapping directly on the screen to place the cursor near that boundary can land it at either edge of the two runs, for the same reason. It is working correctly; it is just tracking the order you typed in, not the order your eye is scanning.
Why some punctuation looks flipped
Parentheses, brackets and quotation marks are defined in Unicode as mirrored characters: an opening parenthesis typed inside right-to-left text is displayed as a closing shape, and vice versa, so that it still reads as “opening” to someone reading right to left. Typed and displayed correctly, this is invisible to a fluent reader of the language. Read by someone scanning left to right out of habit, it looks like the parenthesis is on the wrong end of the phrase. It is not a rendering error — it is the same mirroring rule applied consistently, in every app on the phone, not something specific to any one keyboard.
Adding a right-to-left keyboard on iPhone
- Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
- Tap “Add New Keyboard…”.
- Pick Arabic, Hebrew or Persian from the list.
- Switch to it mid-typing with a tap on the globe key 🌐, or press and hold the globe key for a picker listing every keyboard you have added.
A text field generally sets its overall alignment from the first strongly-directional character typed into it, which is why a message that opens in Arabic lines up against the right edge of the bubble even once an English word appears further into it — the paragraph already committed to a direction before that word arrived.

Why do numbers appear on the wrong side of my Arabic sentence?
They have not moved to the wrong place. A run of digits reads left to right internally, but its position within a right-to-left sentence is set by the Unicode bidirectional algorithm, which places an embedded left-to-right run according to the surrounding right-to-left flow — that is what makes it look reversed to an eye scanning left to right out of habit.
Is my keyboard broken if the cursor jumps around near an English word in Hebrew text?
No. The cursor follows the order characters were typed in, not their left-to-right screen position, so crossing from a right-to-left run into an embedded left-to-right one can look like a jump rather than a smooth slide. This happens the same way in every app on iOS, not just one keyboard.
Does adding Arabic or Hebrew as a keyboard change how text direction works?
It changes what you can type, not how direction is decided. Text direction comes from the Unicode properties of the characters themselves and is resolved by iOS the same way regardless of which keyboard produced the text.
