Why Arabic letters change shape when you type on iPhone

The same Arabic letter can look like four different characters depending on where it falls in a word, and a handful of letters refuse to link to whatever comes after them. Why that is baked into the script itself, not a keyboard quirk, and what the diacritics key is actually for.

Type a single Arabic letter on its own, then type it again in the middle of a word, and it can be almost unrecognisable as the same character — different outline, sometimes a completely different silhouette. Nobody mistyped anything and the keyboard has not swapped one letter for another. Arabic script is built to do this, on paper as much as on a phone, and it followed the same rule centuries before there was a keyboard to type it on.

Arabic is a connected script by design

Arabic is written cursively, closer to joined-up handwriting than to the printed block letters of the Latin alphabet. Most letters link to the letters directly beside them within a word, the way a pen does not lift between strokes in cursive writing. A keyboard, a printed page and a handwritten note all follow this same joining rule, because it belongs to the script rather than to whichever tool produced the text.

Up to four shapes for one letter

Because letters link to their neighbours, most Arabic letters are drawn differently depending on where they sit in a word: on their own, at the start of a word, in the middle of one, or at the end of one. A letter typed by itself takes its isolated form. The same letter starting a word grows a small connecting stroke reaching toward the next letter. In the middle of a word it can carry connecting strokes on both sides, linking back to what came before and forward to what comes after. At the end of a word it links backward only, often with a longer closing flourish. That is up to four distinct outlines for a single letter, and a fluent reader recognises all four as the one character without pausing to think about it — the same way a reader of cursive Latin script recognises a lowercase a whether it opens a word or sits buried in the middle of one.

A word like كتب — kaf, ta, ba, meaning “wrote” — shows this directly: the same three letters look nothing like their isolated, alphabet-chart forms once they are joined into the word, because each one has taken on the initial, medial or final shape its position calls for.

The letters that refuse to link forward

A small set of Arabic letters — among them ا (alef), د (dal), ذ (dhal), ر (ra), ز (zay) and و (waw) — only ever link to the letter before them, never to the one after. Type one of these in the middle of a word and the join visibly breaks right after it, even though the word continues. This is not a rendering glitch and it is not the keyboard failing to connect two letters it should have joined — those particular letters have never linked forward, in print or in handwriting, for as long as the script has existed. It is one of the first things a new reader of Arabic learns to expect, because it is what turns a long word into a string of shorter, visually separated chunks rather than one unbroken chain.

None of this is a keyboard setting

Nothing about this behaviour lives inside a keyboard app, Kibo or any other. You type each letter in its ordinary, single logical form — the same character every time — and the system’s own text-rendering engine chooses which of the up to four visual shapes to draw, based on which letters sit next to it. That is the same division of labour behind why right-to-left text lays out the way it does on iPhone: the keyboard decides which character was typed, and iOS decides how to draw it. A keyboard cannot get letter-joining “wrong” on its own, because it is never the one drawing the joined shape in the first place.

The diacritics that are usually left out

Arabic also has a set of small marks — tashkeel — placed above or below a letter to spell out short vowels and a few other sounds. Everyday Arabic, in messages, on signs and in most books and articles, is written almost entirely without them, because a fluent reader supplies the missing vowel from context the same way an English reader is not thrown by a word with no pronunciation guide attached. Diacritics mainly show up where the text needs to be unambiguous on its own — the Quran, dictionaries, early school readers, or a word that would otherwise read two different ways. On iPhone, the Arabic keyboard keeps them on a secondary symbols page rather than the main letter keys, exactly the way accents and less common punctuation sit behind their own key on other language keyboards, because most typing simply does not reach for them.

Adding the Arabic keyboard on iPhone

  1. Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
  2. Tap “Add New Keyboard…”.
  3. Choose Arabic from the list.
  4. Tap the globe key 🌐 in any text field to switch to it, or press and hold the globe for a picker if you have several keyboards installed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same Arabic letter look different in different words?

Arabic is a connected script, and most letters take one of up to four shapes — isolated, initial, medial or final — depending on where they sit in a word and which letters are next to them. It is the same rule handwriting and print have always followed; nothing about it is specific to typing on a phone.

Is my keyboard broken if a letter looks disconnected from the one after it?

No. A small set of letters — including ا, د, ذ, ر, ز and و — never link forward to the next letter, only backward to the one before. Seeing the join break right after one of them is normal Arabic spelling, not a rendering fault.

Do I need to type the vowel marks (tashkeel) in Arabic?

Almost never in everyday typing. Most Arabic text — messages, articles, signs — is written without them, and readers fill in the vowel from context. They live on a secondary page of the Arabic keyboard for the cases that do need them, such as disambiguating a word or religious texts.

Does an Arabic keyboard app change how letters connect to each other?
