Why does my iPhone keyboard’s light effect only work when I type?

An effect named for ongoing motion — a wave, a fire, a meteor, an aurora — is almost always continuous: the word describes something that keeps going by definition, not something that finishes after one instant. It is not a perfect rule, but it holds often enough to be worth checking before you assume an effect is broken.

Why the settings preview can be misleading

A lot of the confusion happens right inside the settings panel itself. Browsing a list of effects without actually typing anywhere shows a reactive effect at rest — which looks identical to it being off — while a continuous effect keeps moving in the same preview, which makes the continuous ones look more impressive by comparison even when that was never the point of the reactive ones. The fix is simple: before deciding an effect does nothing, tap into an actual text field and type a few characters with it selected. A reactive effect that looked dead in the settings list will do exactly what it was built to do the moment a key is pressed.

Why a keyboard ships reactive effects at all

A reactive effect ties the light directly to the act of typing, which is closer to what backlighting means on a real mechanical keyboard — most physical RGB boards light every key all the time, but the satisfying part is usually the one that responds to your fingers, not the ambient glow underneath everything. Tying an effect to the keypress also means it never competes with reading what you just wrote, since it flares and fades rather than sitting there permanently drawing the eye. A continuous effect is a different, equally reasonable choice: it makes the keyboard feel alive even in the pauses between words, for anyone who wants motion regardless of whether they are actively pressing keys.
