Why does my iPhone keyboard theme keep changing?
Four separate reasons a keyboard can look different from one session to the next — the system Light/Dark switch, cycling between installed keyboards, a setting you changed and forgot, and a shuffle feature working exactly as designed.
You look down mid-message and the keyboard is not the one you remember picking. Nothing was reinstalled, no update banner appeared, and you did not knowingly touch a settings screen. This is confusing more than alarming for most people, and it is worth working through calmly, because there are exactly four ways it happens, and only one of them is a keyboard changing itself on purpose.
1. The system Light/Dark switch moved
Apple’s own keyboard has exactly one appearance setting, and it is not really a theme — it is Light or Dark, following the system-wide Appearance setting in Settings → Display & Brightness. That setting can also be Automatic, which switches on its own around sunrise and sunset. If you are typing on the stock keyboard rather than a third-party one, this accounts for almost every case: the keyboard did not change, the whole phone did, on a schedule you may not have set deliberately.
2. You are not looking at the same keyboard
If you have more than one keyboard added in Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards, each one can carry an entirely separate look, because each is a different piece of software drawing its own interface. Tap the globe key once too often, or a keyboard app you tried weeks ago is still second in the list, and you land on a keyboard whose theme was never the one you have in mind. It reads as “my keyboard changed” when what actually happened is you are on a different keyboard for a moment.
3. You changed it and forgot
Most theme pickers live inside the keyboard’s own settings panel rather than iOS Settings, reachable with a long-press on a key or a small icon on the keyboard itself. That makes it easy to bump by accident — a long-press meant for something else, a tap while the phone was in a pocket — and easy to forget minutes later, because the panel that changed it is not somewhere you normally look.
4. A shuffle or randomize setting is on
Some custom keyboards ship a setting that deliberately rotates the theme — and sometimes the sound and lighting with it — rather than sticking to the one you last picked. This is not a bug when it is present; it is a feature some people turn on and then forget is running, which produces exactly this symptom: the keyboard looking different than last time, with no memory of choosing it. A setting built this way typically rolls a new combination only when the keyboard first appears, never mid-sentence while you are actively typing, precisely because changing the look under your fingers while you are mid-word would be disorienting rather than fun.
A quick way to tell which one you have
- Only the grey system keyboard looks different, and only around dawn or dusk → cause 1, the Appearance schedule.
- The look flips as you tap the globe key → cause 2, a second keyboard with its own theme.
- It changed once and then held steady → cause 3, a setting you bumped.
- It looks different nearly every time you open the keyboard, on the same keyboard app → cause 4, a shuffle setting.
