Why does my iPhone keyboard look orange at night?
A neon or brightly colored keyboard theme can turn warm and orange-tinted after dark even though nothing in the keyboard’s own settings changed. Night Shift is almost always why, True Tone is the quieter second cause, and neither one is something a keyboard app can see or opt out of.
A blue or neon keyboard theme picked in daylight can look distinctly warmer that same evening — pinks lean orange, blues lean green, whites turn faintly amber — with nothing touched in the keyboard’s own settings. It is not the theme changing itself, and it is not a bug in whichever keyboard app drew it. Two ordinary iPhone display settings retint the entire screen after dark, keyboard included, and most people never connect the color shift to either one.
Night Shift is almost always the cause
Settings → Display & Brightness → Night Shift shifts the whole display toward warmer colors, either on a schedule you set or automatically from sunset to sunrise, to cut down on blue light in the evening. It is a filter applied to the entire screen at the display level, not a setting any single app or keyboard extension can see, request, or turn off for itself. A keyboard draws its theme in its normal colors exactly as it would at noon; Night Shift retints the finished image afterward, the same way it retints a photo, a home screen icon or a white Notes page.
True Tone is the subtler second cause
Settings → Display & Brightness → True Tone reads the room’s light through the ambient light sensor and nudges the whole screen’s white balance to match it — warmer under a lamp or overhead bulb, cooler in daylight or under fluorescent light. It is easy to miss because it adjusts continuously and by a smaller amount than Night Shift, but it works on the same principle: a screen-wide color adjustment applied after everything, keyboard colors included, has already been drawn.
Color Filters, more rarely
Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Color Filters can also retint or desaturate the entire screen — grayscale, or a tint favoring one color — for reasons unrelated to time of day. It is a much less common cause than the two above, but it works the same way: a system-level filter over everything on screen, keyboard included.
Telling the two apart
Open Control Center or Settings and turn Night Shift off. If the keyboard’s colors snap back to how they looked at noon, that was it. If they shift only slightly, or Night Shift was already off, check True Tone next — it is on by default on phones that support it, and it is the one people forget about because its effect is smaller and never has a countdown or a schedule attached to draw attention to it.
Why a keyboard app cannot fix this from its side
Night Shift, True Tone and Color Filters all sit in the display pipeline, below the layer where any individual app or keyboard extension draws its own pixels. A keyboard has no API to ask what the current color shift is, and nothing it could do about it if it did — the retinting happens to the finished screen output, after the keyboard’s own drawing is already done. This is exactly the same reason Reduce Motion and Low Power Mode do not automatically reach a keyboard’s own animations: system-wide display and accessibility settings apply directly to whatever iOS draws itself, and only reach further, into an app or extension’s own rendering, if that code specifically checks for them — which color adjustment has no hook for at all.
If you want the exact colors back
Turning off Night Shift, or narrowing its schedule to hours you are not typing during, is the direct fix, and it affects the whole phone rather than just a keyboard. True Tone can be switched off the same way in Display & Brightness if the small color drift bothers you specifically while judging colors — matching a theme to a home screen wallpaper, say. Neither toggle is keyboard-specific, because the thing doing the retinting never was either.
