Why does my iPhone keyboard sound like a piano when I type?

A musical key sound rarely clashes no matter what you type, and that is not luck — it is built from a five-note scale that has no bad intervals to hit, mapped to the keyboard so the same word always plays the same short tune.

Switch a keyboard’s sound to a musical mode and something unexpected happens: you are not choosing any notes on purpose, you are just typing a message the way you always do, and yet the notes strung together sound fine. Not random, not clashing — closer to a little tune than to noise. That is not a coincidence and it is not you getting lucky with your word choice. It is a property of which notes were picked in the first place.

Five notes, not seven

An ordinary major scale has seven notes, and two of them — the fourth and the seventh — are the ones responsible for almost all the tension in Western music. They sit a half-step away from a neighbouring note, which is what creates the pull toward resolution that a melody uses to feel like it is going somewhere. A pentatonic scale simply removes those two notes and keeps the other five. What is left has no half-steps anywhere in it, which means there is no unstable interval left to accidentally land on.

This is not a novelty invented for phone keyboards. Pentatonic scales show up independently in Chinese, West African, Celtic and Andean folk music, among many other traditions, precisely because a scale with no clashing intervals is easy to improvise over and hard to make sound wrong.

Why that makes almost any order sound fine

Wind chimes are usually tuned to a pentatonic scale for exactly this reason. A gust of wind strikes the tubes in a completely unplanned order, with no melody behind it at all, and it still sounds pleasant rather than random, because none of the available notes can produce a jarring interval against any of the others. Remove the two notes that create tension and you remove the only way the sequence could sound obviously wrong. Typing does the same thing a gust of wind does to a wind chime: it picks an order nobody composed in advance, over a set of notes where almost no order sounds bad.

How the keys become that scale

The scale still has to be laid across the keyboard somehow, and the natural choice is the one already sitting there: the rows of QWERTY. Map the notes so pitch rises as you move left to right along a row, and a name typed straight across — a word like “sad” or a run of letters on the same row — comes out as a short ascending or descending run rather than a jump. Moving between rows shifts octave rather than just pitch, so a word that uses several rows bounces between registers instead of climbing in one smooth line. None of this depends on which letters happen to spell a real word; the mapping is the same whether what you type is a sentence or a string of nonsense.

The same word plays the same tune every time

Because the note is decided by which key you pressed, not by chance, the mapping is fixed rather than randomised. Type the same word twice and you hear the same short sequence of notes twice — the melody is a direct, repeatable readout of the letters, the way a music box plays the same tune every time its cylinder turns past the same pins. That is different from the small tone-and-timing variation ordinary keyboard clicks use on purpose so a fast sentence does not sound like one sample looped over and over; here the variation people usually notice is in the tune changing with what you type, not in any one note changing on repeat presses of the same key.

Is a piano keyboard sound just randomly picking notes?

No. Each key is mapped to a fixed note, usually rising in pitch left to right along the QWERTY rows, so the same key always plays the same note and the same word always plays the same short tune.

Why do the notes never sound wrong together, no matter what I type?

Because the notes come from a pentatonic scale, which has no half-step intervals in it — the two notes in an ordinary scale that create tension and clashing have been left out. With no dissonant interval available, almost any order of the remaining notes sounds fine, the same reason wind chimes tuned to a pentatonic scale never sound bad no matter how the wind strikes them.
