Why doesn’t the iPhone keyboard have a Tab key?
A laptop jumps between form fields with one press of Tab. No keyboard on iPhone has that key at all, built-in or third-party, and the reason is not an oversight — a software keyboard has no channel to tell iOS “move to the next field,” only to type into the one it’s already in.
Filling in a form on a laptop, Tab is second nature — name, then a press of Tab, then email, then password, never touching the trackpad. Open the same form on an iPhone and the key simply isn’t there. Not missing from this particular keyboard, not buried in a symbols page one tap away — no keyboard on iPhone has ever shipped one, and it is worth knowing why before assuming it is a gap someone forgot to fill.
No keyboard on iPhone has a real Tab key, including Apple’s own
This isn’t a third-party limitation next to a system feature you’re missing out on. Apple’s own keyboard doesn’t have a Tab key either, and neither does any custom keyboard on the App Store, for the same underlying reason covered below. If a form has several fields to fill in, the only universal way to move between them on an iPhone is to tap directly on the next one.
Where a “next field” arrow actually comes from
Two places on iPhone do offer something Tab-shaped, and both come from the app, not the keyboard. Fill in a web form in Safari and a thin bar appears above the keyboard with left and right arrows for stepping between fields, plus a Done button — Safari draws that bar itself, for pages it recognises as forms. Mail does something similar in its compose screen: small up and down arrows step between To, Cc and Subject before landing in the message body. Neither bar belongs to the keyboard that happens to be active underneath it; Safari and Mail are each drawing their own accessory view and wiring the arrows to fields they already know about, because they built the form.
The other route is the return key itself
A field can also skip the arrows entirely and just relabel its return key “Next,” handing you off to the following field with an ordinary tap of return rather than a dedicated key — the same per-field labelling covered in the guide on why the return key says Go, Search or Send. Both mechanisms share the same trait: the app that owns the fields decided how to move between them, and wired that decision into a button it drew, not into anything the keyboard offers.
Why a keyboard extension can’t add one that works
A software keyboard only ever talks to the one field that currently has focus, through a narrow interface for inserting text and deleting backward — it has no visibility into whatever other fields sit elsewhere on the same screen, because that map belongs to the app, not to the keyboard drawing at the bottom of it. A Tab key added to a keyboard’s own layout could insert an actual tab character into the field you are already in, which is all a keyboard is able to do — and most single-line fields either ignore that character outright or strip it on submission, so even that would rarely do anything visible. Jumping to a different field means moving focus, and moving focus is something only the app itself, or iOS acting on the app’s behalf, has the authority to do.
A physical keyboard’s Tab key is a different mechanism entirely
This is also why a Bluetooth or Magic Keyboard’s Tab key can work in Safari where a software Tab key never could. A physical keypress is delivered to iOS as a raw hardware event, ahead of any app’s own code, and iOS’s key-command handling is what decides what a given key does system-wide — Safari has told iOS it knows how to step through a web form’s fields in response to one. A software keyboard was never given that same channel; it is a view that draws keys and inserts characters on request, not a source of system-level input events the way a physical key press is. The two look like the same key doing the same job, but only one of them is plumbed all the way into iOS’s own focus-handling.
What actually moves you between fields
- Tap the next field directly. Slower than one keypress, but it always works, everywhere, regardless of which keyboard is active.
- Watch the return key’s own label. If it says “Next” rather than “return,” a tap moves you along without reaching for anything else.
- In Safari specifically, look for the arrow bar above the keyboard on a recognised web form — it does the same job Tab would, drawn by Safari rather than by the keyboard.
- Mail’s To/Cc/Subject arrows work the same way, for the same reason: the app, not the keyboard, built the shortcut.
- A Bluetooth keyboard’s physical Tab key works in the specific apps that have wired it up, chiefly Safari on web forms, since that keypress reaches iOS directly rather than passing through a software keyboard first.
