Why does my iPhone keyboard sound tinny?

A “thock” or a deep mechanical click loses most of its low end the moment it comes out of a phone’s own speaker. Why the built-in speaker is the actual bottleneck, not the sound file, and what changes the moment you put on headphones.

A keyboard sound gets picked for a reason — a deep “thock”, a warm typewriter clack, something with actual body to it — and then it comes out of the phone’s own speaker sounding thin, small and a little metallic. That gap between what a sound is supposed to be and what you actually hear is real, and it has almost nothing to do with the sound itself. It comes from the one piece of hardware the sound has to pass through last: the speaker built into the phone.

The speaker is smaller than the sound needs

Reproducing a low, deep note takes physically moving a lot of air, which takes a large diaphragm with real room to move. A phone has none of that room to spare — the speaker sharing a few millimetres of chassis with a battery, a camera module, an antenna and everything else has to be tiny by necessity, and a tiny driver simply cannot push out low frequencies with any real weight behind them. It reproduces the upper-mid and high end of a sound easily — that is where “tinny” comes from — and rolls off hard exactly where the low-frequency thump of a deep key sound lives. This is true of every phone speaker on the market, not a defect in one model or one keyboard app; it is a consequence of how small the speaker physically is.

A real mechanical keyboard has a resonance chamber. A phone does not.

Part of what gives an enthusiast keyboard its low, cushioned character is not the switch at all — it is the case acting as a small resonance chamber around it: the mass of the plate, the foam inside, the thickness of the keycaps, the way the whole assembly damps and reshapes the sound before it reaches your ear. That physical chamber is doing real acoustic work, and a phone playing back an audio clip has no equivalent to offer. The recording or the synthesised sound file can be built with all the right low-frequency content in it, but once it reaches a bare, tiny speaker with no cavity behind it, there is nothing left in the signal path to preserve that weight the way a real case would.

Why it sounds better through headphones or a speaker

Keyboard clicks are a short system sound, and like any other system sound they play back through whatever iOS currently treats as the active audio output — the same route a notification chime or a ringtone would use. On a phone with nothing connected, that route is the built-in speaker, with the size limits above. The moment AirPods, other Bluetooth headphones, or a Bluetooth speaker become the active output, the exact same sound file switches to playing through them instead, with no extra step and nothing to turn on. A pair of headphones or a dedicated speaker has a driver built with room to reproduce low frequencies the phone’s speaker never could, so the same click can sound noticeably fuller and less tinny with nothing changed except where the sound is coming out of.

The ring/silent switch on the side of the phone still governs whether a keyboard click plays at all, headphones or not — a keyboard click is a system sound in the same family as the ringer, and switching to a better output does not exempt it from that rule.

Haptics do not have this problem

A keyboard’s haptic feedback is felt, not heard, so none of the above applies to it. It comes from the phone’s own Taptic Engine rather than a speaker, does not depend on audio routing, and works identically whether the sound is playing through the tiny built-in speaker, a pair of headphones, or not at all because the phone is on silent. If a deep, satisfying key sound is the goal and the built-in speaker keeps undercutting it, haptic feedback is the one part of the experience that a small driver cannot thin out — it requires a Taptic Engine, so it is available on iPhone 7 and later, and it can be turned on independently of whichever key sound is playing.
